 Post subject: Rega Planar 3
On the subject of the above are there any other place where I can get it apart from Tong Lee?

he..he..it seems everybody avoiding Tong Lee!. Apparently, there is no Rega dealer in Malaysia and all rega's came through CD Acoustic from S'pore.
Planar 3 anyway was replaced by P3 and it best for you to hunt for used unit or maybe you can try other brands..Project, Goldring. They do make good TT

 Hi Eddy,
I've a hifi friend living near my place, who has a Rega Planar 3 with
rega arm and cartridge, for sale. He's upgrading to the Oracle,
something in the hi-end stable. If you like to have a listen could arrange for a convenient time.
My friend is in Wangsa Maju, accessible by the Putra/Kelana Jaya lrt line. You can always negotiate the price if you like what you hear.

Thank you for the helpful hints. Vic, yes I'm interested in the RP3. One question though, is the cartridge an MM or MC. I have used MM all this time and would like to try out an MC instead. I have a new PP2 and was wondering whether anyone out there could make some modifications to it at a reasonable price. I'm not a serious listener but would like to make the most out of the TTand will be using my Pioneer AV amp for this purpose. Thanks guys.

 Hi Eddy,
He has the rega (purple colour one) which I think is the MM. Right now he is using the Decca cartridge, MC into a Krell phono stage, if you
audition his TT now it will be that combi. Let me know if you want a listen.
By the PP2 is it the Pipit 2, or the NAD PP2? If it's the pipit 2 you can
always send it back to designer Frankie in K.Lumpur for whatever
modifications you want.
Any particular reason the stock unit doesn't performance and needed modifications?

Hi Eddy,
I 'm not sure how it could be improved upon. However here is a website where the Malaysian hardcore diyers hang around.......
http://www.diyparadise.com/yabb/YaBB.pl
You could join there and ask them, or even commision someone
to modify for you. And some of them are staying not far from where
you are....Seremban.
I would do this...........
1.look at the power supply to the TT,
2.look at the power cord to the TT,
3.look at the isolation platform fro teh TT, as
this is very important, will make or break the
sound of your TT reproduction!
4.Other than these, the speaker system, if
you are not happy with the sound.

eddie,
I have a spare up-rated walwart power supply with and sheilding for the NAD PP-2. I also modded my NAD PP-2. (left over from my own PP-2 mod project)
I have found the power supply mods, plus upgrading the powersupply caps and bypassing the MM/MC switch to make the biggest improvements. Next up is to upgrade the input and output RCA's to something better like Canare or Switchcraft is good.
Cost mods are as follows:
1)24VDC 1000ma power supply plus sheilding RM$75.
2)2pcs 880uf 16V capacitor RM$20.
3)2pairs RCA female sockets RM$40.
4)1mtr wires to by pass MM/MC switch RM$0.50.
Total cost RM$135.50
This will bring the NAD PP-2 to another performance level altogether.
Do note a little soldering practice is required!

However modded, tweaked or improved, a solid state phono stage can be, it's limited to its price point.
2 options
1. Couple the phonostage to a tube buffer. (after replacing those cheap & nasty 5532 opamps)
2. Go tube phono stage altogether.
Only then you could achieve "have reached another level". Till then you're still missing "a LOT".

This is cool, man! Any chance to arrange a listen? That's is if
there are systems here in Malaysia(Klang Valley) that we could
visit for a listen. Can't really remember well how this would sound,
come across briefly, not interested then, so never got down to
remember things at all. Probably, don't know how to listen at those
time, still very green then!
